We are seeking a qualified and experienced Automotive Mechanic for our Transportation Department.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from high school or the possession of a high school equivalency diploma and two years experience as a journeyman automotive mechanic in a standard automobile repair shop; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience as defined above.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
This is skilled work which involves the responsibility for efficient and workmanlike performance of a variety of tasks relating to automotive equipment. The job goal is to keep the district's cars and buses in a state of operating excellence in order that they present no problems or interruptions to the educational program. General instructions are received from the Head Automotive Mechanic and the Transportation Supervisor. However, some leeway is exercised for the planning of the details of each assignment. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
- Performs preventive maintenance and mechanical repairs on all gasoline or diesel transportation equipment;
- Diagnosis and repairs all the district automotive equipment;
- Helps maintain a current inventory of supplies and equipment;
- Assists the Head Bus Mechanic create an efficient and effective system or routine automotive maintenance and preventive care;
- Assists with the high standards of safety and good housekeeping methods in all work-connected areas;
- Acts in the absence of the Head Mechanic regarding work schedule on all equipment repair done in a commercial garage;
- Advises the Head Mechanic of all requisitions for the purchase of transportation supplies and equipment for cost-effectiveness.
FULL PERFORMANCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Thorough knowledge of the standards and procedures of current automotive repair skills; thorough knowledge and skill in using the tools of the trade; good knowledge of the machinist trade; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to work from rough sketches; good motor and hand and eye coordination; manual dexterity; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
